Safe diggings starts when you contact JULIE.
The impact of unsafe or careless digging practices is real and often costly,
such as:
- Personal injury to you or your construction crews;
- Damage to underground lines;
- Damage to property;
- Service outages to your community; and
- Costly repairs to underground facilities.
JULIE, Inc. serves as a message handling notification service for underground utility facility owners, taking information about planned excavations and distributing this information to its member companies. It is the responsibility of each facility owner to mark the location of their underground utility facilities at the excavation site. JULIE, Inc. neither owns nor marks any underground facilities.
The Illinois Underground Utility Facilities Damage Prevention Act requires anyone digging, regardless of the depth of the project, to call JULIE using the national three-digit number 811 or toll-free at 800-892-0123.
This notice must be at least 48 hours (2 working days) prior to the start of excavation and the project must begin within 14 calendar days from the contact with JULIE. If you are planning a weekend project, remember to contact JULIE, Inc. by Wednesday at 4 p.m.
