JOLIET, ILLINOIS – Representatives of JULIE, Inc. (Joint Utility
Locating Information for Excavators) announced the spring kick-off of a
statewide public safety campaign stressing the importance of calling the
Illinois One-Call System before any digging projects. In addition, JULIE
officials recently received a letter from Gov. Blagojevich recognizing
April 2003 as “Dig Safely Illinois” month.
“We are
honored to receive Gov. Blagojevich’s letter promoting underground damage
prevention awareness in the state of Illinois,” said Kevin Chmura, public
relations manager at JULIE, Inc. “The far-reaching consequences of unsafe
or careless digging practices can take a staggering toll, in terms of
costly delays, environmental or property damage, liability, personal
injury and even loss of life.”
According
to state law, anyone planning an outdoor project that requires any type of
digging, regardless of the depth, should call JULIE first at
1-800-892-0123. Common examples of projects that require a call to JULIE
before digging include putting up a fence; installing a swing set, a mail
box post or new water feature; building a deck or room addition; preparing a
new garden area; or adding new trees, bushes or shrubs.
“Digging
responsibly is the only way to dig in Illinois. Loss of utilities can leave
communities without such vital services as police, fire and medical
protection,” Chmura continued. “The call to JULIE and service provided by
utility members are free to the excavator.”
