| Hi everybody!
Scooper is my name and digging is my game. But there are rules to
follow before anyone should use me to dig. There are lots of
reasons adults dig in their yards. Planting trees, bushes, a
garden, building a deck or putting up a fence are just a few. |
 |
|
 |
Did you know utility lines that
supply water, heat, electricity, telephone, internet and TV to your
house are buried in your yard? Damage one of these and guess what
could happen. |
| If your buried
telephone line is damaged or cut by someone digging, you could not call
the Police or Fire Department in an emergency or talk to friends and
relatives. |
 |
|
 |
Electric lines buried under the
ground bring us the power to run many things in our home. If a
shovel blade should strike a buried electric cable, the person digging
could be seriously injured. |
| To avoid personal
injury and damage to buried utility lines, ADULTS SHOULD ALWAYS CALL
JULIE AT 811 or
800-892-0123 TWO (2) WORKING DAYS
BEFORE THEY DIG! In Illinois, it's the law to call JULIE. |
 |
| Within two (2)
working days after the call to JULIE, each utility company will send a
locator to the digging site. Colored flags or paint marks on the
ground will show where the underground utility lines are buried.
People digging should always wait the full two (2) working days before
starting their project. If they should begin to dig sooner and
damage anything, they would be responsible. |

Each utility company uses a
different color flag or paint to mark the ground where their underground
facilities are buried. |
| While the colored
flags may look like fun to play with, never remove them from the ground.
ONLY AN ADULT WHO KNOWS IF THE DIGGING PROJECT HAS BEEN COMPLETED SHOULD
REMOVE THE FLAGS. |
 |
| Kids...always remind
adults to call JULIE at 811 or
800-892-0123 before they dig! You
and your parents can learn more about safe digging in my Activity Book
